The 2026 SEO Checklist: 12 Things Your Website Needs to Rank

SEO in 2026 Is Not What It Was in 2020

Google's AI Overviews, the March 2025 core update, and the continued emphasis on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) have fundamentally changed what it takes to rank. Here's your updated checklist.

Technical Foundation

  1. Core Web Vitals: LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1, INP under 200ms. These are now hard ranking signals, not suggestions.
  2. Mobile-first indexing: Google indexes the mobile version of your site. If your mobile experience is broken, you don't rank — period.
  3. HTTPS everywhere: Non-negotiable. Mixed content warnings kill trust and rankings.
  4. Structured data: JSON-LD markup for your business, products, FAQs, and articles. This feeds Google's AI Overviews.

Content Quality

  1. E-E-A-T signals: Show real experience. Author bios with credentials, case studies, original research, and customer testimonials.
  2. Depth over length: Google rewards comprehensive coverage of a topic, not keyword-stuffed filler. Aim for the best answer on the internet for each query you target.
  3. Fresh content: Regular publishing signals an active, authoritative site. Aim for at least 2-4 posts per month.
  4. Internal linking: Strategic internal links help Google understand your site structure and pass authority to important pages.

On-Page Essentials

  1. Unique meta titles & descriptions: Every page needs a unique, compelling title (under 60 chars) and description (under 160 chars).
  2. Image optimization: WebP/AVIF formats, lazy loading, descriptive alt text, and responsive sizes. Images are often the biggest performance bottleneck.
  3. Canonical URLs: Prevent duplicate content issues with proper canonical tags, especially on filtered or paginated pages.
  4. XML sitemap & robots.txt: Keep your sitemap updated and make sure robots.txt isn't blocking important pages.

What's New in 2026

AI Overview optimization: Google's AI Overviews pull from pages with clear, structured answers. Use headers, lists, and concise definitions to increase your chances of being cited.

Video SEO: Video results are appearing in 30% more queries than in 2024. Even a short explainer video on key pages can boost visibility.
